Dumortierite in Quartz, Bahia State, Brazil

Dumortierite is a very rare, fibrous aluminum borate silicate mineral that is found in the form of masses, small prismatic crystals, or as fibrous inclusions within Quartz. Our Dumortierite is high grade, rough, and from Bahia State, Brazil. The crystals are vitreous and vary in color from brown, blue, and green, to more rare violet and pink. Substitution of iron and other tri-valent elements for aluminum result in the color variations.

Dumortierite was first described in 1881 for an occurrence in Chapenost, in the Rhône-Alps of France and named for the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier (1803-1873). It typically occurs in high temperature aluminum rich metamorphic rocks which result from contact metamorphism and also in boron rich pegmatites.
