Large Cabinet Malachite and Chrysocolla after Azurite pseudomorph, with splayed formation. From Laputo, Kambove, Congo.
Azurite is a soft, deep blue copper carbonate produced by the weathering of copper ore deposits. It is also known as Chessylite, after the type locality at Chessy-les-Mines near Lyon, France. (Fun fact- our family is from the Lyon area in France!)
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It forms in fractures and deep underground spaces where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the means for chemical precipitation.
Chrysocolla is a copper silicate that typically forms as a pseudomorph following other copper based minerals. The form is usually botyoidal.
